Three way caravan fridges are excellent if you are planning to tour for a long time, or be away for an indefinite amount of time. Because they can run from three different power sources, you are sure to always be able to keep them operating.

Many years ago, 3 way fridges weren't particularly great, but they have improved massively over time, and are now much more efficient and effective at cooling, and keeping cool whatever you might put in them. The three different power supplies are intended to be used in different situations, allowing you to use the most conveninet power source at any given time. The only restriction is that you must neve run your fridge on gas while you are on the move. The gas power is only to be used when you are actually camping, in other words when you are not moving, as with any gas camping equipment. While you are on the move, your caravan fridge gas must be off, and the fridge will run from the 12 volt power supply within your vehicle.
If you are camping somewhere where there is a 240v hook-up available, then you will be able to run your fridge on that, saving gas for more remote locations where you may not have access to electricity. It is not advisable to run your 3 way fridge from the 12v power supply constantly as it does draw a lot of power, so it could possibly run your battery flat if left for a long period of time. Because they are heavy on power, it is very difficult to try and run them on solar, in fact it is almost impossible, especially on overcast days. This doesn't matter though as you have the gas power as back-up, meaning you are not reliant on electricity all the time.
One thing that is important to remember is that three way fridges are designed to work within a fairly specific ambient temperature range, so it is worth checking this out in the manufactures technical specifications before you buy, especially if you are going to be travelling in very hot climates. You will not be able to get sufficient cooling from your 3 way fridge if it is operating in very hot conditions, as it will not be able to draw in cool enough air to be effective. While this is a downside for some people, it is worth remembering that a 3 way caravan fridge is incredibly reliable, and is one of the best fridges to have if you are taking long trips where you may be without a 240v power source upon camping.
